The Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon is an annual race held on an old Rail Road line outside of Susanville, California. The trail conditions are ideal for both road and trail runners and the gradual decline offers a comfortable, fast run. The hard packed dirt is easy to navigate and has attracted top running talent since the race began in 2004. The lack of brambles, sharp inclines and natural debris makes the route easy on knees and ankles. Additionally, the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon offers runners a scenic route that crosses 12 bridges and immerses marathoners in California’s natural beauty. Many runners comment that the combination of a soft, fast trail and the scenic mountain view make the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon a memorable and worthwhile event.
More than a great trail in a great location, the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon is also gaining notoriety for its friendly volunteer staff and well organized direction. The aid stations at the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon are located every two miles and are staffed with enthusiastic and helpful volunteers. The stations offer runners a full assortment of items to assist the runners with their journey. The Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon aid stations are well supplied with water, energy bars, Gatorade, oranges and other nutritious snacks. There are also first aid kits with Vaseline and Band-Aids at the aid stations. As one runner commented: “The overall organization with the shuttles, gear drop, water/aid stations and general runner support was more than adequate and everyone we met was gracious, friendly and helpful.” Overall the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon is a great event on a spectacular course.
